Seeing Ali Abbasi’s amazing film The Apprentice; creates a feeling of unease. How can someone be so empty of feelings and morals, and more importantly, how can millions of people vote them to run the country.
The film never feels dead, it’s always moving forward
Ali Abbasi explores all these facets in a highly stylistic and captivating portrait of a man who had everything and yearned for more. The Apprentice follows Donald Trump through a certain era of his career, from the beginning to the madness that unfolded from his huge success in the 1990s and, in particular, his relationship with attorney Roy Cohn. First off, I have to say this movie is GORGEOUS, it has style, 80’s/90’s. the age-old grain is rendered so beautifully, every frame is filled with detail and color. The period feel was definitely created with care and so was the music with some well chosen great pieces to accompany the scenes.
Comparisons to movies like Wall Street etc
are very obvious, but Ali manages to make it his own. It’s a portrait that isn’t very flattering and creates a lot of anxiety because it’s truly horrifying how someone could be like that. The acting is phenomenal and excellent, especially Sebastian Stan who gives a terrifying performance – this is really the Trump we’ve seen on TV. If there’s one negative thing I can think of about this film, it’s that it probably doesn’t explore many of the relationships in the film in any depth.
Some of the characters in the film feel a bit disconnected from the narrative, but that doesn’t detract from the film’s excellence
